Hutton Roof Crags Fell Race remembering Darren Kay – 27th May 2023

Many of you will know of the very sad situation where Darren Kay is still missing after failing to return from a run on Madeira at the end of last year.

Darren has run many races and competed at the highest level on the fells. He regularly participated in the Hutton Roof Crags Fell Race, being the winner a number of times, most recently in 2022, when on the revised course he set a new record.

To mark Darren’s connection with Hutton Roof and with the support of his partner Victoria and family, a new ‘Darren Kay Trophy’ will now be awarded for this and future year’s overall winner. Details of the 36 previous race winners will be added to the trophy and we look forward to it being awarded for many years to come.

This is the 37th running of our traditional fell race over 7 miles (11.2km) and 400 metres of ascent. The race starts at 2.15pm, you must have collected your number by 2.00pm.

Taking in the beautiful hills of Hutton Roof Crags and Farleton Knott, the run follows established paths and routes are partially marked. We will again omit the scree on Farleton as a result of  the ongoing concerns from Natural England which we fully understand and support.

Generous prizes supported by Pete Bland Sports will be awarded for male and female open and vet categories through to Vet 80, including cups for first and second male and first lady.

Some navigation is now required to follow guidance and our license through the Fell Runners Association. Checkpoints and basic route maps are shown below.

Seniors register here:

A new race time limit of 2 hours 10 minutes has been introduced . Appropriate checkpoint cut offs will be applied.

  • Male record: Darren Kay – 00:50:55 – 2022
  • Female record: Sarah McCormack – 00:53:35 – 2021
    Revised Course with navigation 2021

Junior categories of U9/U11, U13/U15, U17/U19 are £5 and on the day entry only (minimum age 6 years on the day). Junior Races start at 1.15pm and registration closes at 1pm.

Car parking, donations requested, will be on the field adjacent to the Village Hall and traffic can be busy around the country lanes and main routes with bank holiday traffic, so please aim to arrive in good time. The car park will open at 11am.

We are of course baking our fantastic cakes and selling refreshments at the Village Hall.

Best wishes and good luck!
